Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) Explained: What Barrie Patients Need to Know

Who is eligible for the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP)?

The services provided under the CDCP are available to all Canadian Residents with a household income of less than $90,000. You must also have access to no other private dental benefits (ie. other insurance plans).

How much does the CDCP cover?

The amount of coverage provided by CDCP varies from 100% to 40% based on the exact household income. Please refer to the table below to see how this applies to you.

What Dental Services are covered by the Canadian Dental Care Plan?

The services covered by CDCP are extensive across your general dentistry needs. However, we understand that it can be confusing to understand exactly what is covered. To help with that, we have complied a list of the most frequently used Barrie dentist services and their respective eligibility requirements. Please note this information applies to adults only.

Dental Examinations and X-Rays

  • New Patient Exam:
    • 1 per lifetime at a single office or 1 per every 12 months at a new dental office
  • Recall Exam (quick check up):
    • 1 per 12 months
  • Specific Exam (patient has a specific concern):
    • 1 per 12 months
  • Emergency examination:
    • No frequency limit
  • Full mouth X-ray Series:
    • 1 per 5 years
  • Individual X-rays:
    • 8 x-rays per 12 months
  • Panoramic X-ray:
    • 1 per 5 years

Fillings

  • All teeth are covered for filings.
    • Once per tooth every 2 years.

Crowns

The CDCP provides great coverage as it relates to crowns. However, crowns are among the services that require pre-operative authorization from the government to ensure it meets the eligibility criteria.

  • Crowns:
    • 4 crowns within 10 years per patient
    • For each eligible tooth, 1 crown per 8 years
  • Crown Repair and re-cementation:
    • 1 per every 3 years for each crown

Dentures

CDCP provides fantastic coverage, allowing patients to receive their first set of dentures or replace their existing dentures!  Many dentures require pre-authorization.

  • Complete dentures (full mouth denture)
    • Covered every 8 years
  • Partial Dentures
    • Covered every 5 or 8 years depending on the type of denture fabricated
  • Denture repairs and additions
    • Covered 1 per every 12 months

Root Canal Treatment

  • First time root canal treatments are covered for all teeth with no pre-authorization required
  • Root canal re-treatment
    • 1 per tooth for lifetime
    • For re-treatment only, pre-authorization is required from the CDCP

Dental Hygiene Services:

  • Routine cleanings
    • Covered 1 per every 12 months
  • Deep cleanings (gum disease treatment)
    • One course of treatment per every 12 months
    • Further treatment covered, but requires pre-authorization from CDCP

Dental Sedation

  • Nitrous oxide (laughing gas) or oral sedatives are covered
    • 4 sessions per 12 months
